How your tarot birth card is worked out
The calculation is simple arithmetic rather than anything mystical. Every digit in your date of birth is added together, and if the total comes to more than 21 the digits of that total are added again until the number falls within the range of the Major Arcana. That final number points to one of the 22 Major Arcana cards, and that card is yours for life.
Because the sum can be reduced more than once, many people end up with two related cards. The higher number is usually called the personality card, describing how you meet the world and how others tend to experience you. The reduced number is the soul card, describing the quieter motivation underneath. When both reductions land on the same card, that theme simply runs twice as strongly.
Unlike a daily draw, none of this changes. Your birth card is fixed by your birth date, which makes it less a forecast than a description of the material you have been working with all along. People often find it reads as uncomfortably accurate about the pattern they keep repeating, which is rather the point.
Common questions about tarot birth cards
Is a tarot birth card the same as a star sign?
No, though they get used in similar ways. A star sign comes from the position of the sun on your birthday and belongs to astrology; a birth card comes from adding up the digits of your full birth date and belongs to tarot. They are separate systems, and it is perfectly normal for the two descriptions to emphasise different things about you.
Why do I get two cards, a birth card and a soul card?
Because the arithmetic often reduces twice. The first total gives your personality card, which describes your outward approach and the way others tend to read you. Reducing again gives the soul card, which points at the deeper motivation behind that behaviour. If your numbers reduce to the same card both times, you simply have one card carrying both roles.
Can my birth card ever change?
No. It is calculated purely from your date of birth, so it stays the same for your whole life. What does change is your relationship with it: people frequently report that the difficult side of their card dominates in their twenties and the constructive side becomes more available later.
What if my birth card is one of the frightening ones?
It is genuinely not a problem, and Death, the Tower and the Devil all make perfectly good birth cards. None of them predicts anything unpleasant about your life.
Do I need to enter my birth time or place?
No, only the day, month and year. Birth time and location matter for astrological charts, not for this calculation, which is why the form asks for so little. Nothing you enter is required in order to see your result.
Why does the form ask for gender, and is it required?
It is entirely optional and only used to adjust the wording of the interpretation slightly. Leaving it blank produces a neutral reading that works just as well, and the result card itself is identical either way.
